The Hawthorne Bridge spans the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon joining Hawthorne Boulevard and Madison Street. It is the oldest vertical lift bridge in operation in the United States. It is also the busiest bicycle and transit bridge in Oregon with over 4800 cyclists and 750 TriMet buses daily. The last Friday of every month, Shift volunteers serve free hot coffee and pastries to bicyclists on the Hawthorne and Steel bridges from 7-9am. This particular day, Sprocket Smoothie owner Kyrstin Westwind brought her extracycle which has been fitted with a bicycle powered blender to make smoothies for the cyclists.
