The Hawthorne Bridge spans the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon joining Hawthorne Boulevard and Madison Street. It is the oldest vertical lift bridge in operation in the United States. It is also the busiest bicycle and transit bridge in Oregon with over 4800 cyclists and 750 TriMet buses daily. Pictured here is Friends of Trees volunteer Greg Tudor who dresses up in a tree costume to wave to bicycle and car commuters to raise awareness for their organization which plants and cares for city trees and urban natural areas.
